Nefatavl (Hnefatafl, Tablut, Viking Chess) is an old chess-like turn-based strategy game played by vikings in northern Europe ages ago. The game has a few characteristics that differentiate it from other chess-like games. The two parties of Nefatavl, the attackers and the defenders, are totally different. They have different starting positions, different goals and even unequal amounts of units at their disposal.

             

Another interesting fact about the game is that there are no official rules, since no complete set of game rules have been found. Because of this a horde of similar games have been made. This version is based on the rules of the Nefatavl board game produced and published by Tidskriftet Skalk.

Nefatavl 2.1 represents my vision of what Nefatavl should look like on the computer. As the version number suggests, this is the second version of Nefatavl that I have made for the PC. The first version was much simpler. Version 2.1 is a slightly updated version of 2.0 and it features, among other things:

• 3D realtime graphics with dynamic shadows and smooth floating cameras
• Both single player games against the computer and two player, hot seat games
• Tutorial that teaches you how to play
• Music and sound effects

To play the game you need at least the following system:

• Windows XP or Vista (with the latest service packs installed)
• Modern Intel or AMD processor, multi-core processor recommended
• 512 MB memory (might work with less memory on Windows XP)
• DirectX 9.0c or OpenGL compatible video card (pixel shader 2.0 capable card recommended)
• 30 MB free H/D space (additional space might be required during installation)
• Keyboard and mouse
• Sound card recommended but not required

NOTE: You need administrative rights to install the game. Remember to remove older versions (e.g. betas) before installing this version of the game. Please see the readme file in the game installation folder for technical information and troubleshooting.
